Hi, thanks for reaching out to us about this front control gas range! We are happy to answer this for you. This range is designed with an electric (pilotless) ignition that eliminates the need to light the burners. Because there is no standing pilot light, gas is only being used when needed. With this system, electricity sparks when the control is turned to the LITE position and gas is simultaneously released to the burners. In the case of a power outage, you can light the cooktop surface by holding a lighted match to the burner and then turning the knob to the LITE position. We recommend that you always use extreme caution when lighting the burners this way. We hope that this helps! -Eliza@GEA
