Yes, you can use pods just turn off laundry soap auto feature.

It's similar to how you would handle a dishwasher's dissolving wrapped packet, the water has to be a certain temp and running long enough on it to fully dissolve. Definitely put it in the drum part, if at all. However, High Efficiency washers (HE) are meant to have low suds, as that's why the liquid detergent is, low suds, less bubbles. With dishwashers, its recommended not to put dish soap in a dishwasher, it has to be DISHWASHER soap, that means lower suds also.
