A:AnswerHello and thank you for reaching out about this excellent air conditioner. Typically, when left on Cool mode, the unit will not need emptied as the water collected is repurposed to cool the internal components and help the unit run more efficiently. When it is first run or on extremely humid days, it may require emptying. Keep in touch! - JB
A:AnswerI know there are no seals. I know there is an extra screw. It seems that the owners manual use of the phrase "apply the foam seals" is both incorrect and misleading. From checking around most other companies don't require you to return to the store to purchase what costs maybe $1. I finally figured out that the self-tapping screw must be to hold the hose vent to the window panel. As once you "lock" that vent in place, it readily slides out on its own. There are two small holes, one on each side of that vent attachment. Once it is is place and "locked" screw one of the self-tapping screws through that hole and into the soft plastic. That will keep the hose attachment in place.
Great portable a/c unit. Very poor instructions and no foam seals.
A:AnswerYes - unit will turn off blower when the set temperature is reached - then automatically turn back on when above (i.e. warmer) the set temp. (Nice feature!)
A:AnswerHello AJ - Thank you for the excellent question about our air conditioner. This model does have a drain on the back. However, it would only need to be drained in high humidity areas as the water collected is generally used to help the unit run more efficiently. Keep in touch! - JB
A:AnswerHi Joel - Thanks for viewing GE Model APCA14YZBW! Following are the electrical ratings: Amps 12; Watts 1350; Volts 115. Keep in touch at GEAppliances.com. Sue
A:AnswerHave you felt the air coming out on the outside? It’s hot...I highly doubt bugs are going to want to fly into it. You would probably have to take the hose off the unit and rinse it out...that would be my guess. I have the screens on the windows.
A:AnswerYour unit is most likely over-filled with water. Your unit draws moisture from the air, so if you live in a humid area, you will have to drain it regularly. It’s either that or you have a crack in the base of your portable a/c. If you have two drain plugs on the back of your unit, you can connect a hose to the top plug and then put the other end of the hose into an empty container. Hope that helps.
A:AnswerHi Rin - Thanks for viewing GE Model APCA14YZBW! Yes, the air conditioning process is basically moving warm humid air outside so the hoses are designed primarily to move heat and humidity from a room. Operating the unit without an exhaust vent will not allow heat and humidity to be removed from the room. The unit will not function properly without an exhaust vent. Additionally the unit must be vented outdoors, not into an attic or other indoor space. A:AnswerHello ohiobobcat - Thank you for reaching out about this excellent air conditioner. The unit does operate under normal procedures with an evaporator and condenser. Keep in touch! - JB
A:AnswerHi DbinROC - Thanks for viewing GE Model # APCA14YZBW! Auto Evaporation Technology on this model evaporates the water under most room conditions with no bucket to empty. There is a water plug/drain cap. The Water Full indicator (“FL” on the control panel display) illuminates when the internal water tank has filled with condensed water. Place a shallow 1 quart or larger pan (not included) below the lower drain located on the back (near the
bottom) of the air conditioner. It does not have a hose connection. We suggest viewing page 8 of the Use and Care Manual: https://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-5000439-1.pdf - If you have any additional questions, do not hesitate to ask, we are also happy to help at GEAppliances.com! A:AnswerHi Christine - Thanks for viewing GE!The air conditioner has a 5' exhaust vent hose with a 5” inch diameter. Keep in touch at GEAppliances.com. Sue
A:AnswerWhen the unit is first switched on, only the fan is powered up to get air moving through the cooling coils, which is pretty quiet. After a few moments the A/C compressor kicks on to chill the coils which cools the air. It should have a sound similar to (but louder than) your refrigerator when it first kicks on after you leave the door open for a few minutes or have just fill it with food after grocery shopping - and it is working harder than normal. Since this air conditioner has to cool much more air volume than your fridge, it is louder than your refrigerator. Additionally, the unit has to push the heat it has pulled out of your room through the hose and outside your window, and that adds a little more noise. Unlike a window-mounted unit with half the noisy working parts hanging outside of the walls of your house, all the noisy working parts of this unit are in the room with you, so this unit will be noticeably louder than a window-mounted unit. However, after a few days of enjoying cool air, the sound it makes will become just background noise.
All that said, the “refrigerator startup” sound this unit makes could be described as a low buzz at a moderate volume that goes away when the compressor turns off but the fan is still running (such as when the room reaches the temperature you set on the unit), but should not sound like grinding or a buzzer/alarm. If you move the unit while it is running and the buzz noticeably changes pitch or volume, that could indicate something loose or damaged internally. Also, be sure you don’t have any kinks or sharp bends in the exhaust hose and that you do leave the recommended space around the unit for good air flow.
A:AnswerHello. Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. You may be getting an odor from the internal water tank. We suggest draining the tank. To Empty the Internal Water Tank:
1. Unplug or disconnect power.
2. Place a shallow 1 quart or larger pan (not included)
below the lower drain located on the back (near the
bottom) of the air conditioner.
3. Remove the cap and the rubber plug and drain the
water tank.
4. Re-insert the drain plug and screw the cap snugly into
place.
5. Plug in or reconnect power.
Our guidance of removing condensed water will remove any odor it produces. Stay well. Geoff@GEA
