Yes. You should let it run for a while before using it the first time. There is also a smell that comes along with it. I was not advised to use self cleaning but to let it run at 400 degrees for an hour or so. Self cleaning will obviously get even hotter. I opened a window and it wasn't too bad. The smell hasn't occurred since.

The small amount of smoke and/or odor that is emitted from a new range (both gas and electric) on its initial use is normal. This is usually caused by the tape used in the oven for shipping purposes. While a self-clean cycle prior to use is not required, it is recommended. Otherwise, it may take several uses to burn off the newness odor.
