The answer to this is VERY dependent on a number of factors. First off the GE unit will illuminate the clean unit indicator every 100 hours which may or MAY not be sufficient. All these nugget ice makers are a natural biofilm/mold haven and as such sanitizing every couple of weeks at a minimum should be performed. The spores that promote this are airborne, not water borne, so every time you open you the lid to get ice, they settle into the interior. I run ONLY distilled water and maintain a 1ppm of chlorine dioxide (FDA approved for human water sanitation purposes) to further offset the tendency. ClO2 has a strong anti-biofilm/mold behavior superior to plain chlorine or bleach.

To keep nugget ice tasting fresh and the ice maker performing properly, descaling and sanitizing is highly recommended. Sanitizing is recommended once per week to keep the unit hygienic and disinfected. Descaling is recommended for removing hard mineral deposits and should be performed every 2-3 weeks depending on the hardness level of your water. if using tap water, you may need to adjust the cleaning schedule based on the level of hardness. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.There is an indicator light that blinks when it is time for Cleaning. I don't really know an exact time as to how often to clean it. I have had mine for a couple of months and it just came on.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.There is no indicator light. I run a clean cycle weekly. I turn on the ice make daily for a few cups of ice only. The is produced in about 20 mins or so. Makes plenty of ice. The sound is very low. The water reservoir is fantastic!
