Hi Rodney- This is Sue at GE Appliances. Thanks for viewing model GUD27ESSJWW! Use only 4” rigid metal ducting for the home exhaust duct. Use only 4" rigid metal or UL-listed flexible metal (semi-rigid or foil-type) duct to connect the dryer to the home exhaust duct. It must be installed in accordance with the instructions found in “Connecting The Dryer To House Vent” on page 8 of the installation instructions: http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=31-16728.pdf - We hope this is helpful. Enjoy!

That being said, however, all the literature I've read is unanimous in saying that the semi-rigid duct is the better choice. The primary reason is one of fire safety. With its twists and turns, the flexible duct is much more prone to lint buildup which increases the prospects of a fire. Accordingly, unless your particular installation simply cannot accommodate a semi-rigid duct, I'd caution against using the flexible duct. Again, it's the installer's call. Owing to the lint build-up issue, if you go with the flexible duct, give some thought to cleaning it of lint on an annual or bi-annual basis. Regardless of which you use, be sure to keep your insurance policy up to date.
