Yes this keyboard functions as a protective case for the Google Pixel Slate. It uses very strong magnets to attach itself to the tablet. It folds up to use as stand and when in the tablet orientation, it protects the back of the tablet. When not in use it folds over and protects the tablet front and back. This keyboard is very versatile and very useful!

It's also not super protective, as the sides are all open so it won't protect in case of drops. if you want something rugged, look for a case that covers the edges at least.
