Both the camera and floodlight have sensors. The floodlights can turn on independently of the camera, but will also come on if the camera senses motion. The floodlights have an option where you specify Brighter, Medium (default), Darker, and Darkest. We have ours set for Medium, which waits until it is now dark. It then continues to work until it is no longer dark out. I haven't tried the other options since Medium works perfectly for us.
