• Yes. I have had a Nest controlling a heat pump with electric backup heat for two years now and it works fine.

• yes, had heat pump on old home and new home. it does work and kicks in emergency heat. however, you should always send a picture of your current thermostat wiring to nest via email to confirm everything will work prior to purchase.

• It is compatible. Nest offers an online checker to input your color coded wires to ensure compatibility should you want to check for yourself ( https://nest.com/widget/compatibility/ ). Awesome little wonder.
