Yes, the product can connect to a COX modem. It does need to be hard wired. For any other additional points they do not need to be wired in, those will be wireless. This product does come with an ethernet cable to connect to the COX modem.

You can connect Nest Wifi router directly to your modem's WAN port to set it up. If your modem is a modem/router combo, you can put it in Bridge mode to avoid connection issues.
