They detect you talking to enable transparency mode and pause music/podcast, not the person talking to you. So you have to reply or press the earpiece to switch from ANC. You can also stay in transparency mode if you want. They do seem smart enough to stay in ANC while talking in a phone call, but will keep switching/pausing if you talk back to a podcast or sing along to music.
