Hi JoeC, The GMAX Ultra Electric Scooter gives you the option to switch gears so you can use the one that is more suitable for the street you are riding on. The default gear is gear 1 when you power the scooter on, the screen displays L1. The maximum speed of Gear 1 is 15.5 MPH. You can switch to gear 2 by pressing the button "+", and the screen will display L2. The maximum speed of Gear 2 is 20MPH. When it is in the gear 2, press the button "-" on the console to switch to gear 1, and the screen will display L1. Best Regards! GOTRAX Customer Support Team
