No. The way one measures coffee determines caffeine level outcome. It comes down to VOLUME vs. WEIGHT: As beans are roasted, they lose water and puff up slightly. The longer the roast time the more pronounced these effects. Dark roasted beans weigh less (and are slightly larger) than light roast beans. Lightly roasted beans are roasted for less time making them denser, smaller, and heavier than dark roast. As a result, each particle (volume) of ground light roast contains more caffeine than a particle of ground dark roast. When ground beans are measured by VOLUME, the light roast ground coffee contains more coffee and weighs more than the dark roast grinds, thus producing a more caffeinated brew. Another way to visualize this is to use popcorn as an example. An un-popped kernel is equivalent to a light roast; a popped kernel is like a dark roast. As the popcorn kernels are heated (roasted) the moisture (water) inside causes the kernel to dramatically expand and pop. Moisture is lost as steam resulting in a roasted popcorn kernel that weighs less and is larger than an unroasted popcorn kernel. When measured by VOLUME a cup of unroasted popcorn contains far more more kernels and is heavier than an equal cup of popped popcorn. The bottom line: When measuring by VOLUME, you’ll end up with more a greater caffeine buzz with a light roast than with a dark roast. Measuring by WEIGHT, however, gives virtually equal caffeine levels.

Please try again later.Actually, it's the other way round--lighter roast typically has more caffeine, b/c the heat and length of time at high heat required to produce dark roast destroys or degrades the caffeine. The roast is all about the flavor and frankly, when you're drinking a very dark roast or "French roast" you're tasting the roast more than the coffee. I personally like it that way, but when I want that caffeine bump or just a lighter more "flavorful" cup, I go to a medium roast and freshly fine ground from fresh beans.

Other folks believe that light roast has more caffeine than dark roast because caffeine is lost when beans are roasted.
