A1 - Maybe the dehumidifier capacity (pints) is not adequate for room size? A2 - I believe the unit is continuously monitoring humidity, so the evaporator may turn off, but the rest of the unit will stay on. Use timer mode if you want to shut off completely.

Based on my experience (in a garage), the initial run time to reach the shut-off of 50% humidity level is based on how moisture saturated the items in the area are. I have many cardboard boxes and wood stored in the 3-car garage, so it took my unit about 2 days to initially reach the auto shut-off. When the humidity level gets down to 50%, the compressor will shut-off, but the fan will continue to run to circulate air. When/if the humidity level drops further (lower outdoor humidity), the fan will then also shut-off when the humidity level drops to 45%. When the humidity level starts to rise again, the unit will restart. I live in Mississippi and the only time (in one month) that the unit shut-off for an extended period of time (2 days) was after a dry cold front went through the area.

Remember that you are dehumidifying the interior air plus the moisture adsorbed onto your home interior (like furniture, carpet, curtains, ect.). Also note that the volume of the interior space may be too large for the unit to handle. I would use a fan to circulate the air around the dehumidifier. If the unit is just dehumidifying the immediate volume of air, it may cycle off prematurely. Also every time the tank fills up, the unit shuts down until the tank is emptied, This will also affect reaching the desired humidity.
