I believe it's rated for 4,000 sq. ft. but if your basement is particularly damp you'll be emptying it a lot or hook up the drain. Also, if your basement is sectioned off into several rooms and not an open space it would not dehumidify that 4,000 sq. ft. as efficiently.

I have a separate fan to blow air behind the dehumidifier to circulate the dehumidified air throughout the basement. It is set up with a timer that I plugged the fan and dehumidifier into. It comes on 4 times per day for about 90 minutes at a time. I increase or decrease the on-time periodically depending on the humidity levels of the basement.
