• doesn't really matter as long as the surface is flat so it won't tip over.

• Ours sits on the floor...atop a small piece of extra carpet to eliminate possible moisture from mist!

However, please ensure that the unit is placed on a flat, level surface, as if the humidifier is at an angle it may leak.
