Read the instruction manual and follow the guidelines. People need to understand that this carpet cleaner will not restore old worn carpet to look like brand new carpet - that's wishful thinking.

There is also a crevice tool you can use on the steps. The upholstery tool is the same as the stairs but wider and I used that one and it got the job done quicker with the same effect
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You have to use the tools. I used them and it took some experience, but they did work. Stairs just aren't easy. It would be risky to use the Hoover on stairs without the tools. I strongly discourage this. A plus is that the tube connecting to the tools is long, giving a lot of range. We have 14 stairs and I cleaned all of them with the Hoover unit at the bottom of the stairs. It is a challenge to get the unit up and down stairs when you have two levels to clean....From my research, this is a common problem as the cleaners need a certain amount of features to clean, which adds to weight, etc. There are some cleaners for smaller areas, including stairs, and results are mixed.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You should use the tools to clean stairs, but it works great. The hose and tools are very easy to assemble to the machine. You use the powered hand tool for the stair step and the crevice tool for the stair/riser interface. The machine would be light enough to lift to the stairs, but you wouldn't get as thorough a job done.
