You can use either the 564 or the 564xl. The xl is a better value generally. The slot for the cartridge is bigger, yes. You need to center it with the slot in the back and it will seat itself. You may also be trying to put a photo cartridge in the black slot. They are narrower. Hope this helps.

The printers are shipped with just the regular size cartridge (HP564 for example) It isn't too narrow -- follow the directions on the cartridge carriage for installing your ink cartridges.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I made the same mistake with the black cartridge. The 564 XL only goes on the right hand side of the slots for the cartridges. The 564 XL is for regular black ink such as letters. The 564 is for photos. There is a difference in the ink. And yes the 564 XL is wider since I suppose more people do regular printing then printing photos. I hope this helps. Christylee53132
