Hi Buffi. No, each cartridge slot is different, one for Black cartridges, and one for Tri-color cartridges. In this HP 2-cartridge printer, the printheads are built into the cartridges (black and tricolor). Our exclusive feature, Single Cartridge Mode, allows you to print with only one cartridge -- just don't leave the empty one in. So you never have to buy color if you don't want to.

Please try again later.No, they are not the same even though they may look the same, but I would advise you not to place a black cartridge into the color cartridge, you may have a problem leaking black ink. Please understand each one does different things releasing the right quantity of inks. Color Ink takes a longer time than black ink when you print.
