It has more ink in it and will last longer. It is actually a better value too. I can't remember the ratio, but an example would be if you paid twice as much as the regular ink but got 3 times more ink. The only issue would be if you don't print very often. An ink cartridge can dry out before it is empty, but your use would have to be extremely low for that to happen. I'm retired and don't print much. Occasionally, I'll print something out, but I can go a month without printing sometimes. I haven't had one dry out.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Your printer should have a sticker such as the one in the photo telling you the cartridge number. The cartridges are the same size; XL simply means that the cartridge contains more ink. XL cartridges can print up to 3X more pages; useful if you print a lot.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hi Mitzi, All new printers come with print cartridges just to get you going and will run out after a short while. By now, you've undoubtedly purchased new ink. To answer your query, I always purchase the XL version of any cartridge because the have nearly twice the ink. They cost more, but not as much as purchasing two cartridges. What I have done is accessed the refill ink market Web sites and have always been pleased with those cartridges costing anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of original cartridges and still have the same guarantee. I use my Envy for printing occasional colored pages, but it is best used for printing photos as the name implies. My main printers are the HP OfficeJet Pro series, but I continue to use the ink refill companies after my original cartridges are used up. Good Luck
