Thank you for the question. The DeskJet 2734e uses HP 67 ink cartridges and can print in single-cartridge mode, using only the black cartridge. This is not meant to be a permanent feature. Infrequent use of the printer can result in clogged nozzles. Keeping the printer powered on will allow it to run its cleaning routine when needed and avoid ink viscosity issues. Printing one page per week is also a good way to keep the printer lubricated and always ready to print. You may want to consider one of the affordable LaserJet models that print only in black and white. Laser printers use toner, a substance that melts when printing and delivers the image to the page. It might be better in long-term use for infrequent monochrome printing.
