Yes, if your printer uses both color and black ink cartridges, both should be installed for proper operation.

I have not used color in my 7000 HP series for quite a few months. The printer stopped working giving me a message "print head missing, misaligned etc..." I saw on You Tube that there is usually a "simple solution" for this problem. It showed a solution with a hypodermic which you applied to each port to clean and clear any blockage. I sent for the kit (just over twenty bucks with shipping), and tried it. After trying to clean the ports for about 20 minutes each with no effect I left the syringe on overnight. The next day I tried to apply a little more pressure on the hypodermic. The top membrane blew off, squirting solvent all over the printer. They do caution you not to apply too much pressure or that will rupture the membrane rendering the print head useless. You find out soon enough how little it takes to do "too much". Another lesson for me. My advice is to use color at least every two to three weeks. I think this will keep the color ink flowing and not allow it to cake up and clog. Just a theory.
