• HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 will not work. All 4 cartridges must be inserted with ink remaining

• No. You have to have all of the cartridges in place. Most of the HP printers, though, have a setting where you can specify that it's ok to just use the black when the colors run out. I can't remember where that is but it was a popup when the colors ran out on one of my HP printers.

• Because the ink also works as a lubricant for the printhead, you need to have the other three cartridges installed. Dragging the printheads "dry" across the page is like driving a car without oil-it's going to quickly wear the printheads out.
