You can use HP printers without subscribing to the Instant Ink program. However, this printer does require authentic HP ink cartridges. FYI, I do enjoy the Instant Ink subscription and believe that I save money by not having to purchase cartridges all the time. I've used the service for years now.

The overall price of cartridges is cheaper and it's fun to get them in the mail - about once every 3 moths for me. I have a couple of extra cartridges I keep on hand , but the auto order id perfect for me, going on 5 years now.
