Yes it is. First thing I did after my purchase was pop the cover off. Swapped the 2x 4gb out for 2x 16gb then and there.

I tried a matched set of 2 x 16GB G.SKILL Ripjaws specced correctly for the published specs of this laptop. They turned out to be incompatible and I had to RMA them. I then tried a Crucial 32 GB kit (CT2K16G48FRA32A) and that works well. Caveat Emptor. (And, HP service person answering this question? You must have the wrong service manual. The correct one clearly states the RAM is upgrade-able.)
