I've owned a couple of HP laptops with the tablet style capability, and I've never had an issue. The keyboard is disabled once it is folded beyond a certain point. As long as you place the laptop on a sturdy/safe surface, you shouldn't be concerned about damaging the keyboard. I've used it on my lap in a bouncing truck, sitting on a table and while laying on the floor without any issues. Just make sure you don't have anything poking the keyboard when it's folded, and you should be fine.
