“Does the carafe sit on a heated base plate or does the coffee stay warm only because of the insulated carafe? Also, does this have an auto-shut-off feature?”

With thermal carafe coffee makers, there is not a heating plate. The coffee comes out hot, into the thermal carafe and the coffee maker shuts off. The thermal carafe keeps the coffee hot for hours. That way there is no burning of the coffee!

This comes with a thermal carafe which I think work really well from past experience... it basically shuts off when done brewing because it doesn't need to keep brewing when it's all done because it doesn't have or need a heated base plate, that's why you get an insulated carafe, get it? I don't like heated base plates because they might "cook" the coffee and make it bitter, even if they turn off automatically, typically after 2 hours or so. If you read my review, you would see that I haven't used this particular item yet, so I can't speak to any of the features or results but the price was sure right because I'm cheap.
