The flashing L means that the cooktop is in standby mode. It is normal for the fan to be on from the moment that your plug in the unit until several several minutes after cooking has been completed and you have touched the power icon (circle with verticle line) to turn off the unit. From standby mode, you must put induction-compatible cookware on the cooktop, touch the power icon, touch the function icon (three dots and three horizontal lines), and touch - or + to select a power level or temperature level. (Refer to the table on p. 9 of the manual; stupidly, the display lacks enough digits to show power in watts or temperature in degrees.) I would suggest putting a magnet to the bottom of your cookware. If it doesn't stick, the cookware is incompatible with induction. Even some cookware with a base containing magnetic metal might work. For example, some pots and pans don't have uniform, flat bottom surfaces, and others are composed of layers aluminum and stainless steel, with alumnimum predominating. It's crucial to check the label on the cookware. Please post to let other people know whether it was the cookware, or whether you had to exchange the unit.
