What you are describing is typical when the original duplex receptacle had one outlet controlled by a wall switch (e.g. for use with a lamp) and one outlet always on. Typically the red wire is the switched one and the black is always on. The original duplex receptacle would have had tabs between the two outlets broken off and removed so the outlets could be wired separately. This USB outlet cannot be wired that way due to its design. So you can use the red wire connected to hot on the new outlet and the entire receptacle plus USB chargers would be controlled by the light switch. Another option is to use the black wire as hot on the outlet, and the entire outlet plus chargers will always be on. If there are two red and/or two black, connect both of the same color to the outlet and connect both of the other color together with a wire nut. If there is only one red and/or black you can cap the one not used with a wire nut.

This outlet can't do that. Use the red wire for hot on the outlet if you want both outlets and charger ports to be controlled by the switch. Use the black wire if you want it all always on. If two black and/or red wires, use both of one color on the receptacle, and tie both of the other color together with a wire nut. If only one black.red wire use one for the receptacle and just cap the unused one with a wire nut.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.When I installed mine, the red went in on the live side on top, the black went on bottom, and the white went in where it said for it to go in. The ground gets wrapped on the bottom with the screw. If you still have an extra wire, it may be a black wire, you can pigtail the two black wires together (I recommend watching a video on this if you do not know how to do it, it’s super simple).

Please try again later.The red wire is just another black (supply , power or hot is the term) u can use that( if its connected in your breaker box which it probably is) use a tester to check for current ,but generally it's just another hot wire for this application so only use it by itself! ( or pigtail off the black but not both TOGETHER!) and the white to white and ground to ground
