Mini display port and thunderbolt (apple) ports have the same physical size etc so yes it will work w a Mac. The difference is Thunderbolt ports also allow for power and the ability to daisy chain addl thunderbolt devices off one port. It can be used for monitor(s), storage devices etc. The reality is thunderbolt equipped devices are rare and now a day most thins are moving to USB C including Apple.

Check the data rates on the Mac Book mini display port to verify that data rates are higher than HDMI 1.X to determine if the higher data rates of 1.X are useful to you. However, since HDMI 1.X are backwards compatible with HDMI 1.0, the cable will always work.
