Yes it needs the app for set up or you can go to where it’s at and press the CLEAN button and it’ll vacuum everywhere in the house. In the app you can set no-go-zones where it’ll detect where not to vacuum and mop. Also on the app if it’s camera sees something it’ll take a picture and show on the app and ask you if it’s not a obstacle, temporary, or to set a no-go-zone. If you have an Alexa you can tell Alexa to tell the robot vacuum to clean the house or to clean by specific rooms.

If you are looking to purchase a robot for someone who will not be using the app, we would suggest looking into the 600 series (694 is a great one) and the 900 series robots.
