• Yes you can use them individually or as a pair. They do not have to both be used to be able to listen to music or use the phone. You cannot you the noise cancelation or ambient noise features with an individual bud, but that is to be expected in my experience.

• Yes you can use each bud separately. Max volume was extremely low on my pair. So I returned them. You should make sure its not a manufacturer defect and just a faulty pair on my part.

• So each earbud is paired to specific controls i.e. you can specifically designate one ear to music controls and one ear to noise canceling controls. You can use one ear but that specific control is only designated to that ear.
