Descaling is because of the water, it has little to do with what you are brewing although minute amounts of chocolate could accumulate in the drip area and running a descaling cycle would help clean that too. How frequently would depend on the water you are using. I have very hard water and like to descale every month or two just to keep everything clean and running well.

Descaling regularly removes mineral build up that can affect taste and quality, ensuring your Keurig® brewer brews a perfect cup, every time. Depending on the mineral content of your water, calcium deposits or scale may build up in your brewer. Scale is non-toxic but if left unattended can hinder brewer performance. Regularly descaling your brewer every 3-6 months helps maintain the heating element, and other internal parts that come in contact with water. Calcium deposits may build up faster, making it necessary to descale more often.
