I think it's personal preference. I ran mine for about 6 months without a filter didn't have any problems but I was using City water .If you're using well water there are a lot of minerals in it . I would probably use a filter. It will definitely take the impurities out of water and make your coffee taste a little better. If you have trouble installing it. I would get on YouTube and look up.
