Yes, you need to plug in the unit. The knobs also illuminate when in the on the position, which is a very useful feature. Check the measurements. we replaced a fridgadaire cooktop and needed to enlarge the opening by 3/8 of an inch.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The cooktop plugs into 120 volt circuit (looks like standard electric). I had to get my electric cooktop plugin which was a 240 volt converted to 120. There doesn't appear to be a way to use a battery but you can always check the manual.
