Wow, all of these answers are bad. Center speakers are a compromise. They have worse off axis performance than bookshelves. If you can fit bookshelf speaker, fit a bookshelf. Having all matching speakers across the front, Left Center Right, is best for timbre matching. The next best thing is to match the brand and series of speaker. So for instance, If you have SVS ultra bookshelves, and cannot fit a another ultra bookshelf under your screen, you would want an SVS ultra center, and not an SVS Pinnacle or Aerial 5B. Timbre matching allows for a smooth transition when a sound pans from speaker to speaker. I cannot emphasize this enough, center speakers underperform against equivalent bookshelves. They may look more impressive, but their tweeter axis is inferior.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The center channel has two woofers. The frequency response of the center channel does not go as low as the surround speakers. The center goes down to 82hz vs 62hz for the surrounds. They do appear to use the same woofers and tweeters, just different roll off points.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes. The center speaker is your main speaker for dialogue which is more pronounced and the bookshelf speakers are more subtle and are also good to run in stereo for music.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I'm far from an audio expert, but from what I understand, the biggest difference is simply the center-channel speakers are designed to perform while lying flat horizontally, whereas you'll have a degradation of sound quality if you have to lay the bookshelf speaker flat to make it fit. So if you have a home theater space where you can add a bookshelf speaker upright at the same level as your left and right speakers, go for it, but otherwise you might want to consider a center channel.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. As I understand it, the center speaker is more tuned to the mid-range sounds.....i.e. voices, in particular....whilst the book shelf will accommodate a larger range of sounds. Best answer I can give.
