From my understanding the "handwashing" cycle is for extra-delicate items that in theory aren't supposed to be put in the washing machine at all. If a care label says "hand wash only" and you really don't want to hand wash it.... Roll the dice and try the hand wash cycle setting. The "delicate" cycle is for items that need a light touch, but are still suitable to be machine washed. Depending on the brand/make/model of your washing machine these cycles could potentially be incredibly similar (and sometimes within certain brands, the same thing) for models where there is the most difference it typically boils down to each cycle having different intervals of time where the items being washed are in the agitation stage.
