I'm pretty sure it's twice the resolution of 1080 making it a better picture

By comparison, a full HD 1080p image is only a 1920x1080 resolution is has approximately 2 millions pixels. Therefore, a 4K TV screen has around four times the pixels than a 1080p TV can display. More pixels means images that are crisper and capable of showing more details on the screen. So 2160p is definitely better than 1080p. The higher the number the better the images and associated details that can be seen.
