This is the absolute worst function of this microwave. Not even a clue as to the settings or time required. Really stupid

Please try again later.Yes - the secret is that there is no secret, and softening butter is a natural capability of the inverter microwave :-) Your mileage may vary, depending on the temperature of your refrigerator and the size of the stick of butter. My 14 year old Panasonic which just died needed 75 seconds at 2 to make a stick table-ready, while this brand new LG is a bit aggressive even at power 2 for only 50 seconds - softening the middle of a 4 oz stick just a little more than I'd like, so next time I'll try power level 1 for maybe a minute twenty and work from there. Be creative with your kitchen toy, and feel free to experiment with it. Oh, and be wary of metal butter dishes - if you use them, be sure to leave the lid off, of course, and be aware that you may need to adjust the time slightly (usually a bit longer), and the metal may shield some of the butter from the microwave energy.
