Yes, there is a water heater, and it has the ability to create steam. Any of the steam cycles will heat the water so dried on food will soften before washing. Most cycles, but not all, are steam cycles. The cycles, however, can run for a considerable amount of time, depending on which combination of cycles you choose. For instance, if I run the longest cycle (i.e., a heavy cycle, which is also a steam cycle, and extra drying time), the dishwasher will run for nearly 3 hours and 45 minutes. But, the length of time the dishwasher will run depends on the particular cycle(s) you choose.
