Yes, they are a little larger in size than the Philips hue. I have recessed lights outside to have a smaller housing which will take the hue bulbs but not the LIFX.

It would depend on the shape of the recess. This bulbs are the same basic size and pear shape as a standard Edison style lightbulb, so if a regular bulb will fit you should be good to go.
