Hi. Yes, the Linksys RE6500 is a dedicated range extender and requires an existing Wi-Fi network.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes you need at home WiFi. This is just an extender. It boosts your home WiFi signal to areas of your house where streaming may buffer or not have a strong enough signal.

In my device wifi list, it will show the same wifi name as your provider but with a "_ext" at the end, or the same wifi with an ext for "extended". You will need some origin source, broadband, DSL, satellite, something to give you a wifi signal first, then this extender worksites magic. I live in the mountains at 3200 ft. My DSL wifi is in the middle of the house, I use this extender in the bedroom end of the house, where it provides a strong signal to directv which extends the TV signal on it's own hardware back down to the other end of the house with our finest TV. I personally avoided the google and Alexa devices because of my lack of a cell signal at the house and they are app driven devices. So this extender worked like a charm for me.
