I really can only answer the last part of your question about Arris surfboard. We bought the Arris sb6190 a year ago and it has worked well. No problems no failures. It even played nicely with our old Apple air porter.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You don’t need a switch with the Velop system. Each node comes with an Ethernet cable that you can hook up to your modem. The rest of the nodes in the system are pretty much seamless and can be placed anywhere in the house and used like wi-fi extenders. I purchased the Arris Surfboard SB6190 to use with mine and I’ve been pleased with its performance so far.

Sometimes you can configure your frontier device to only run as a modem, with an outgoing port going into the first velop node. Connect the outgoing port of node#1 to a switch (I used the netgear gaming switch). Then I connected the Ethernet ports on the switch to other nodes for Ethernet backhaul. node #2 is connected to Vonage and it works well for me. If you don't want a switch, I think it should still work via the wifimesh.
