If you already have a VPN provider such as IPVanish, NordVPN, etc. then you can configure this router to work with your subscribed to VPN provider. DD-WRT is a Linux based opensource firmware for routers. All the settings will be totally different than the original manufacturers firmware if you install DD-WRT firmware but you can do a lot more with it but it's not for the not so tech savvy people unless you can follow how-to instructions. Most VPN providers if you have subscribed to them already will have a how-to configure instruction page that you can follow in order to get this router to work with their VPN service and it doesn't always require you to install DD-WRT firmware. ExpressVPN has their own firmware that you can install and it will route everything using their network. It's pretty easy to use.
