There is a speaker and microphone in the unit itself so you can talk back and forward without a phone or a base unit. That being said, we have had two defective units that would not charge or operate properly. We are abandoning Lively for another service. A friend has had a system for a number of years with great success. Perhaps their manufacturing is slipping.
