When using Skype, I can choose to disable the video capture feature and still enable the microphone feature on the camera. This will allow for audio capture without the camera side. For other software, you may not have the option of using audio or video separately. But to answer it simply, yes. It does capture ambient sounds and isn't the best at isolating things such as your voice and will pick up other sounds around. Personally, I do recommend a dedicated microphone or headset for recording audio.
