There is a green light that appears on the top, when you 1st turn the mouse on, but it does not stay on.

Yes, on the top there is a small green light when it's active

There is an on/off switch on the bottom of the mouse. That is the best way to know if the mouse is on. There is a small light that will show in the middle of the left/right buttons but that light will only flash on and then fade away when it is woke in up from "sleep mode".
