This response is probably about 2 years and 4 months too late, but that definitely depends on whatever surface you'd be playing on. Seems to work pretty darn good on my smooth wood desk, but I still prefer to use a mousepad. If your desk is glass or something I would probably advise against it, but a smoother wood or metal should work good.
