It won't go 40ft. Look at the Logitech presentation mice with laser pointer. I have one and it works perfectly. Check the specs before you purchase. Logitech will be able to chat with you on the best solution for you.

If you are looking to use this in a boardroom or something like that where it would be more line of site with no walls I am confident you will get a longer distance, just not sure about 40 feet.
