Because it has bluetooth capabilities, as long as the TV supports it, you should be able to directly connect to the TV. I know samsung TV's support that. You don't have to connect it to a game console first. In fact, I have purchased a few xbox controllers just to use with my PC, iPad, or apple tv 4k without ever connecting it to a xbox console.
